Is it safe to wear an iphone armband while horse riding?

I have purchased a new iphone. I do horse riding. Some of my friend has suggested me not to keep iphone while horse riding. It can slip from your pocket. So please suggest me can I use iphone armband and will it protect my iphone during horse riding.
